BIO

Hoshi (they/them) is the main character of The Fabulous Gays.Hoshi lives in Socorro County, a network of small coastal Californian towns. Hoshi is in their late twenties, lives with their partner Cami (they/them), and works a myriad of part-time jobs all around town. Most of the time, Hoshi can be found cashiering at Coup de Jubilee or volunteering at Marsha Hall, the local queer youth center.Hoshi may lead a busy life, but they can always make time to help people—in fact, this is their passion. Hoshi loves listening to people, helping them open up about their problems, and ultimately guide them in the right direction. It is this passion that inspired Hoshi to help a young man named Archer on that fateful first Monday of the new year. The year that everything changed.

ABILITIES

As a Facet User, Hoshi has unlocked their innate psychic powers. In order to have full control over these powers, the user must inhabit a specific Facet, of which Hoshi has three; though only one is currently known.MAZE bestows Hoshi with the ability to read minds. This Facet takes the form of a marble statue, broken at places and revealing the interior to be computer boards and electronic components. The statue’s face is still, perpetually locked in an expression of curiosity. The back of the head is open into a mane of computer cables and wires. At the center of the statue’s forehead, there is a slight depression in the shape of a butterfly’s wings.By inhabiting MAZE, Hoshi can look into a person’s eyes and know what’s troubling them. The deeper and longer Hoshi stares, the more that they learn. When using this ability, Hoshi sees a highly abstracted version of the person’s thoughts. Hoshi often describes that they see the route between a person and their problems as though it were the puzzle on the back of a cereal box.It is the power of MAZE that inspired Hoshi to help other people and their problems.

LOOKS

Hoshi is tall and shapely. They have porcelain skin. Their hair is long and black (though I often stylize it to be dark blue or purple, because I think it looks cuter that way).Hoshi has brown eyes.Hoshi wears make-up all the time. They prefer deep reds for their lips, only light amount of blush, and set eyeliner/mascara to the MAX. They can be wild and expressive with their choice of eye-shadow; glitter is a must for social gatherings.Hoshi’s wardrobe is a mess of second-hand items, old favorites, and even some hand-made clothes. Hoshi is confident in their body. They love showing off their long legs and midriff. Hoshi is always down to wear a crop top. Yes, even in winter. As long as Hoshi feels comfortable in their own body, there know there’s nothing they can’t overcome.

AESTHETIC

Hoshi’s aesthetic is bright, contrasting colors. The best example of this is evident in a slice of ripe watermelon; black seeds in a sea of deep red surrounded by harsh white and vibrant green. These are the principles of everything Hoshi wears or buys. Bright colors; baby blue against hot pink. High contrast; sunflower yellow against grape purple. And always, always, a little black and white in there for good measure.Hoshi’s motifs includes stars (particularly cushion-like stars like those often seen in Kirby games), butterflies, and hearts with sparkles.Hoshi’s emoji is five-pointed star: ⭐️

TRIVIA

Before The Fabulous Gays was a novel, it was an interactive story created for a Game Jam. There are many, many differences between that and what would become The Fabulous Gays, but here are the bits that concern Hoshi the most:- Hoshi was originally controlled by the player’s choices. Because of this the original Hoshi felt more like a vehicle for the player to experience the story. For the novel I wanted to really show Hoshi’s character as I saw it from the very beginning: a person willing to help others who also happened to be kind of a disaster. A well-meaning disaster, if you may.- Since the original story was set in a city, rather than the small network of Californian towns of Socorro County, Hoshi got around on a Vespa scooter named “Lotus”.- There were plans, at some point way later in the narrative, to have Lotus also gain access to an Aruma (the first incarnation of Facets), but this went by the wayside with the reboot. Probably for the best.- In the original version of the story, Hoshi and Cami were rivals vying to see who really was the leader of the team. Ultimately, I didn’t like this interplay. Also, we all know that this kind of rivalry is there just to hide how you have feelings for another person. So I just skipped the BS and let them be together. Also, we all know Cami is the true leader of the team. Always.- In the original version of the story, Hoshi and Mako’s relationship hinted at a playful, casual romance.
I can confirm that Hoshi and Mako dated at some point, likely on and off during high school or college, never for too long though. At the end, they decided they were happier being friends. This part of their relationship is not brought up in Book I because by then it’s old, old history.
- In the original version of the story, Hoshi’s MAZE is described as a female-looking entity with deep red skin, flowing dark hair, and no garments other than the jewelry on their body.

Hoshi’s parents immigrated to the US from Japan. Hoshi’s mother was pregnant at the time, and she gave birth to Hoshi at the hospital in Socorro County. Hoshi is an only child.- Hoshi’s father was a music producer. He died when Hoshi was very young.- Hoshi’s mother was a stay at home mother until her husband’s passing, when she worked for the postal office of Socorro County until her retirement. She no longer lives in Socorro County, she travels all around the US.

Hoshi went to school in Socorro County, meeting Mako and Ras early during their freshmen year of high school; though Ras was actually a sophomore at the time.

Hoshi volunteers at Marsha Hall, the local queer youth center. Hoshi even has a little room on the second floor of the building where they help people. Many people assume Hoshi runs the Marsha Hall, in part because of how much time they spend there, but it is Vicky who is actually in charge. Something for which Hoshi is endlessly grateful for.

Hoshi stays up to date with what’s popular, but they’d never consider themselves a member of one specific fandom. From their point of view, they just like being able to enjoy everything and anything; from board games to K-Dramas, to nature documentaries and 90’s sitcom reruns, to Smash Brothers on the couch and D&D over the web. Seriously, Hoshi is DTA (down to anything).

BIO

Cami (they/them) is a character from The Fabulous Gays.Cami runs the local music venue in Socorro County. Whenever they are not running the venue, organizing events, or meeting with bands, they are likely spending it at home with their partner Hoshi (they/them). Cami is--for better or worse--an introvert in an extrovert’s profession. They love their job, they love getting to meet so many inspiring musicians, they adore that they’re able to give these people a chance to shine on the stage… but at the end of the day, they often find themselves drained. All they want is to spend some quiet time with their favorite person in the whole world.Cami is the current owner of The Pink House on Golondrina Street, a California town house that--for as long as anyone has known--has always been painted some shade of pink. It is in this home that Cami attempts to maintain some resemblance of order while Hoshi tries to help people with their problems. The house is always a little bit of a mess--but at least, it’s their mess.

ABILITIES

As a Facet User, Cami has unlocked their innate psychic powers. In order to have full control over these powers, the user must inhabit a specific Facet, of which Cami has a couple. Currently only one of them is known.OPERATOR bestows Cami with the ability to see from afar. This Facet takes the form of a person and their pet bird, both of which are made of reflective chrome. The person’s eyes are pupil-less, and their metallic hair is wild and kinky like a stainless steel brush. The pet bird, just about the size of a crow, has what appears to be a webcam for a head. On the person’s chest there is slight a depression in the shape of a butterfly’s wings.By inhabiting OPERATOR, Cami can witness what is happening somewhere else as though they were seeing it through a camera’s lens. This second vision happens simultaneously, so it does not take extra concentration, nor is there need to focus on one feed over the other. Cami is such a master of this Facet that they’re able to work or do whatever task they wish while also being fully aware of both visions. That being said, there is a delay--a kind of travel time--required for OPERATOR to arrive at the place Cami wishes to see; this wait time is nearly instantaneous for anything within the range of their town, but the further out from that the longer it takes for the second vision to activate.

LOOKS

Cami is of average height and build. They have black skin. Their hair is dark-brown and coily. Cami has gone through many hairstyles in the last few years and so they are not adverse to dying their hair, chopping it, growing it out, braiding it, or letting it be free and wild. As of Book I, Cami’s hair is growing out of the red side-cut it was during last year’s summer.Cami has dark brown eyes.Cami’s wardrobe is split into two categories; stuff to wear for going out and stuff that’s just comfortable to wear. Around the house, Cami likes to wear denim shorts and worn-out jeans, along with band tees without sleeves. Cami can’t stand long sleeves, the shorter the sleeves, the better. Cami has a sewing machine they keep just for little fixes like this. Cami’s attire for going to work, or going out on the town, is a little different. Cami loves button-up shirts, but only if they have colorful, tasteful prints on them. Always tucked in. Cami tolerates the sleeves on most button-ups, unless they are long, in which case Cami rolls them up as high as they can. They like to pair these tops with newer, less torn up jeans or dress pants, finishing their usual getup with round sunglasses and a pair of loafers with a slight heel.

AESTHETIC

Cami would claim they don’t have an aesthetic, but an examination of their tastes would reveal the opposite. Cami gravitates towards pattern and texture. Their favorite outfit is a short-sleeves button-up with a print of monstera leaves and sliced lemons, along with a pair of black jeans that are so dark you’d think they’re brand new. The properties of the intricate print, with its hyper-realistic depictions of the leaves and lemons, and its bright colors, are contrasted not only by the deep black of the jeans but also the texture of the denim.Cami’s motifs includes birds (particularly crows or ravens), leaves/branches, and musical notes.Cami’s emoji is single eye: 👁

TRIVIA

Before The Fabulous Gays was a novel, it was an interactive story created for a Game Jam. There are many, many differences between that and what would become The Fabulous Gays, but here are the bits that concern Cami the most:- Originally, Cami worked for a big company in the city, and thus their style of attire was band tee grunge or corporate super boss. When the setting changed to the small town of Socorro, I decided to heed Cami’s original distaste for the corporate grind and had them do what they’d always wanted to do: work with music.- Since the original incarnation of The Fabulous Gays was more about fighting, Cami’s personality was also a little more extreme, with Cami constantly on the lookout for Rogue Arumas (spirits of past lives that could wreck the human world). I think Cami prefers the calmer, more laid back life they lead now.- Cami originally drove a convertible, which served as the gang’s main way to get around the city. Cami still has an old make of car, though it was a gift from a good friend and is currently being repaired.- In the original version of the story, Cami actually had two Aruma (the first incarnation of Facets), their names were OPERATOR and SURGEON.- OPERATOR was an owl-like creature with a webcam for a head. It would allow Cami to see and communicate from afar.- SURGEON looked like a metallic person with long, reflective hair. Using its scalpel, SURGEON could slice through space, creating a rift connecting it to another place in time. Cami used this to move across large spaces.- In the end, I decided to take my favorite elements of both Arumas, and create with them the version of OPERATOR that appears in the story.

Cami is not from Socorro County, they moved there several years back as they were transitioning through jobs. Cami is originally from Northern California, though they have family in Philadelphia and Georgia.- Cami had a slight falling out with their family, though they still keep in contact.- Cami has a father, mother, and a younger sister.

Before Cami came to own the local music venue, Backstein Haus, they worked there for several years. The owner of the venue became Cami’s friend and, when he passed away, he left the venue to Cami, fully trusting in them to continue their mission.- This friend was named Arthur Thane.- Arthur’s catchphrase is printed along the archway that leads into the music venue, “The World Needs Jazz.”- Hoshi worked at the music venue part-time… for about three days before Arthur fired them. Cami felt so bad about the way Arthur let Hoshi go that they went out of their way to apologize. It was during this cup of coffee that the two of them really got to know one another.- Later, when the two of them started dating, Hoshi revealed the truth of their power, and helped Cami unlock their own psychic abilities.

Although it is true that Hoshi brought Jason into Cami’s home without asking them, Cami did not stay mad for long. Cami understood what Hoshi was trying to do, and how much help Jason would need to recover. It’s because of this that Cami offered Jason a job at the music venue.

Sometimes, Cami gets invited to be on the local radio station. Mostly to talk about music, or at least goes there under the pretense to talk about music. Cami and the radio host have a good back-and-forth, which people really enjoy listening to.

BIO

Mako (she/her) is a character from The Fabulous Gays. She may be short of stature--but she packs a mean punch! Mako is Hoshi’s best friend and the group’s voice of reason. Unfortunately, she often ends up getting roped into Hoshi’s ridiculous schemes.Mako was the first of the group to unlock her true potential and because of that she’s had more time than anyone to master her powers… but also question said powers. Just because they have superpowers, does that mean they should use them? Mako asks herself this question every day.

ABILITIES

As a Facet User, Mako has unlocked her innate psychic powers. In order to have full control of these powers, the user must inhabit a specific Facet, of which Mako is known to have at least one.LOVELESS bestows Mako with incredible strength and speed. This Facet takes the form of a large person, twice the size of Mako in both height and width. This person is nude, sexless, and their entire body is covered in engorged, rippling muscles. LOVELESS has a head of colorless hair, much like Mako, though their face always appears to be in shadow. Along LOVELESS’s shoulders and back there is a collection of small markings, akin to tattoos. Among the geometric shapes, there is one that stands above the rest, for it is shaped like a pair of butterfly wings.By inhabiting LOVELESS, Mako gains unbelievable physical properties. She gains strength that betrays reason, bending iron bars, punching hard enough to break concrete, jumping high enough to clear fences with ease. Mako is one of a few Facet Users whose body has actually changed because of their abilities. Although Mako is short of stature and as cute as a button, she is actually ripped. All without the effort it would require to maintain such a shape. All signs point to this being a side effect of inhabiting LOVELESS, but Hoshi is not entirely sure…

LOOKS

Mako is short of stature, so much that she’s often confused for a teenager, even though she’s in her late 20’s. Mako has tan skin, with brown freckles on her cheeks. Her hair is medium length, and a mess of colors. Mako dyes her hair all the time, often without caring to bleach it beforehand, leading to the beautiful disaster it is now. Mako’s hair is a mess of steel gray, once purple, remnant cyans, somewhen pinks, and forgotten blues. Because Mako’s hair lacks a single defining hue, she often thinks of her hair as being colorLESS.Mako has brown eyes.Mako has long conceded that she will never look like an adult. Her short stature means that traditionally femme clothes just don’t look right on her. She makes up for this by wearing items that widen her frame, so that at least she looks like a short person, rather than a tall child. She achieves this by wearing puffy jackets, zipper hoodies, big sweater, straight jeans, and overalls. There’s a bit of street fashion in Mako’s style. She leans towards bright, obnoxious colors, though you’d never spot her at work wearing anything but black.

AESTHETIC

Mako’s aesthetic is as much a mess as her hair. On one hand Mako loves pastels, there’s nothing more Mako than a cone of soft-serve strawberry ice-cream, but her apartment isn’t all baby blues and baby pinks. There’s something about simple pleasures and old, worn out things that make Mako very happy. Her favorite coffee mug. Her loud, canary yellow love seat with mismatched cushions. There’s something about the appearance of something that’s been used, lived in, that fills Mako with joy.Mako’s motifs includes coffee beans/cups, stickers, pencils and pens.Mako’s emoji is oncoming fist: 👊

TRIVIA

Before The Fabulous Gays was a novel, it was an interactive story created for a Game Jam. There are many, many differences between that and what would become The Fabulous Gays, but here are the bits that concern Mako the most:- Mako may be the single character who changed the most and the least in the transition between game and novel. Her abilities and appearance both remained pretty much intact while her personality shifted significantly. In the original story she was more passive, way sweeter, and a bit of an air-head. When the story transitioned from The City to Socorro County, Mako’s personality shifted more into the party’s voice of reason; always calling out Hoshi’s ridiculous plans but following along nonetheless.- Mako and Hoshi’s relationship in the original game hinted at them having a romantic relationship. So much that the events of the game happen while they’re going out on a date.- This history is still canon, though it happened a long, long time before. Mako and Hoshi are happier as friends than they ever were during those short-lived romances.

Mako and her family are originally from Maui. Her parents divorced when she was young, and so her mother took her to California. They moved up and down the state until they ended up in Socorro County. Years later, Mako’s parents remarried and so her mother moved back to Maui. By then Mako was attending college and working part-time, so she decided to stay in Socorro County.- Mako visits her family in Maui at least once a year.- Mako has two older brothers, both of which stayed with her father in Maui during the separation. They are on good terms--even though they can’t explain how is it that their little sister can beat them any sport. It’s not even fair.

Mako and Hoshi met in their freshmen year of high school. They got to know one another because the alphabetical layout of the seats meant that Mako (Yamanaka) and Hoshi (Yoshinaga) were pretty much always sitting on the last two seats of the classroom.- It was during high school that Mako first discovered the power of Facets.- Back then, Mako had long hair and Hoshi had theirs cut very short.- Mako took Hoshi to prom. Mostly because Hoshi and Ras, their off-and-on-again boyfriend, had recently broken up with them. They had a good time though.

Unlike Hoshi, who works part-time pretty much everywhere in town, Mako has maintained the same two jobs for several years: barista at Coup de Jubilee and cashier at the local arts and crafts store.

When Hoshi moved in with Cami, the two of them offered Mako a room at the pink house but she declined. At the time, she told them that she didn’t want to make things awkward, seeing as how Hoshi and Cami were still relatively early in their relationship.- In truth, Mako didn’t want to move in because she has a secret. She’s been writing and, in the perpetual chaos of the pink house, she knows she would never be able to write a single word in peace.

BIO

Jason (he/him) is a character from The Fabulous Gays.A few years back, Jason’s life changed in incredible ways—least of which was transitioning. He hit the literal and metaphorical jackpot harder than anyone else had before… but then life punched back.Lost in more ways than one, Jason wandered up and down California, going as far as his skateboard could take him. Eventually he stumbled upon Socorro County and a wonderful stranger who not only offered him a place to stay, but the chance to heal.

ABILITIES

As a Facet User, Jason has unlocked his innate psychic powers. In order to have full control of these powers, the user must inhabit a specific Facet, of which Jason is known to have at least one.THUNDERLORD bestows Jason with the power to grant clarity and inspire truth in others. This Facet takes the form of a large man, dark skin covered with golden glitter. The man’s body is impossibly—and impractically—muscular, like that of movie action heroes. His muscles and skin are flawless, save for the top surgery scars across the pecs. The man’s hair falls down to his shoulders in thick black curls. The man’s face is obscured. There is a source of light coming just behind his head, as though a halo or the sunrise peeking over the horizon. The shadows cast by the light are so intense, it is impossible to tell what the man’s face is. Or if he even has a face at all.By inhabiting THUNDERLORD, Jason gains the ability to make people say what they really think. In most cases, this makes people who second-guess themselves to turn off their filter and say what they really want to say. In some rare instances, Jason has been able to give someone enough clarity to come up with the solution to an otherwise impossible problem.A few years back—when life punched back—Jason lost the ability to inhabit THUNDERLORD. Hoshi is helping him recover, but he still has a long way to go.

LOOKS

Jason is tall. In fact, he’s taller than Hoshi when they’re not wearing heels; but since Hoshi is always wearing heels, everyone thinks they’re the same height. Jason is in his mid 20’s. He had light skin, but his years of skating shirtless has given him a bronze California tan. Jason’s dark brown hair has grown out of control. It comes down to his shoulders. Sometimes he ties it up in a bun or keeps it in order with a baseball cap.Jason goes through periods of growing out his facial hair, getting used to it, liking it, hating it, shaving it off, then longing for it. He likes to threaten Hoshi that one day he’ll grow a handlebar mustache.Jason has blue eyes.Once upon a time, Jason dressed to the nines and in the finest of brands. He was trying to be something else. Someone else. When life happened, he accepted that he didn’t care for dress shirts or dress pants—or dress ANYTHING. Nowadays, Jason has become the skater he knew he was always meant to be. Denim jeans and shorts. Always torn up somewhere. Vans sneakers. A denim jacket nearly as old as him. A baseball cap or a beanie if the weather demands it. Button-ups in muted tones that will never, under any circumstance be buttoned. No shirts. His chest always bared. He is proud of his scars.

AESTHETIC

Jason’s aesthetic is the complete opposite of minimalism. Smooth surfaces? Get that shit out of here. Put some clutter in there. Make it look like people LIVE HERE. Rustic furniture. Band posters with the edges torn up from all the times they’ve been moved. The scratches on his skateboard. These are not signs that something is less valuable, less than whole. They’re signs they’ve been loved. That they’ve served a purpose.Jason’s motifs include skateboards, pizza slices, backwards baseball caps, torn-up dollar bills, bent coins.Jason’s emoji is high voltage: ⚡

TRIVIA

Before The Fabulous Gays was a novel, it was an interactive story created for a Game Jam. There are many, many differences between that and what would become The Fabulous Gays, but here are the bits that concern Jason the most:- Jason’s first incarnation, then named “Kin”, was meant to play a bigger role in the story—and even serve as the third route for players to experience—but due to time constraints it ended up being cut. Kin is mentioned in the story, but never actually appears in it.- Jason and Kin share a few similarities, both are trans male, AFAB, and love skating. Kin was more of a line skater, while Jason prefers to do his skating on a board. Kin also didn’t wear a shirt, showing off his top surgery scars, though his fashion was more punk. Kin had lots of piercings, tattoos, and a brightly-colored mohawk. Kin was also just white while Jason is mixed race.- Kin’s Aruma was named CUPID and had a pretty similar power-set, though it couldn’t have been more different looks-wise. CUPID took the form of an archer perched over a pillar, bow at the ready. The idea that the archer itself was made of marble was something I ended up reusing for MAZE’s new appearance.- When it came time to reboot The Fabulous Gays, I thought long and hard about how Kin would change. I recognized there were many things I was not happy with. Since I never got to actually write him, I felt I had the freedom to let him be a completely different person.- I decided to change the design of CUPID because I realized I was falling into a bad trope with it. Jason being a trans man, I felt like I was making a huge mistake by making his Facet—the reflection of his innermost psychic power—be tangentially related to the idea of love. The idea of “cupid” evokes arrows with hearts for tips, romance, and a bunch of other expectations that are so often associated with femininity and women in general. It felt like I would be giving the audience mixed messages; Jason is a trans man but his psychic power is presented in the context of femininity? As soon as I realized that, I knew I had to go back to the drawing board.- One of the few things that remained from Jason’s first incarnation was the fact that he was couch surfing with Hoshi. Since Hoshi was now living with Cami, I thought the three of them living under the same roof created for some very fun chemistry.

Jason is named after a song by the band The Midnight. “Jason”, from their album Endless Summer, was one of the songs that inspired me to write the original version of The Fabulous Gays.

Jason has a large family back in Oregon, where he’s from, but after what happened there he left that world behind. He has not reached out to them and they have not reached out to him. Jason does not mind this arrangement—it was his choice after all—though he doesn’t tell people about his past. When asked if he has siblings, he replies that he was an only child and that his parents separated when he was young. Both of which are untrue.

As Jason wandered up and down California, he stumbled upon Socorro County… and Hoshi. They literally walked past one another. Their eyes met for one second—and Hoshi stopped. Jason was in rough shape. Hoshi asked him if he needed a place to stay. He lied of course, but by then Hoshi had decided what they would do.

Jason works part-time at Cami’s music venue.

Jason is currently seeing a young man named Eddie.

BIO

Archer (he/him) is a character from The Fabulous Gays.Nineteen year-old Archer used to live a boring, delightful life. He used to get up, leave the dorms, and go to class. He used to worry only of his grades. The most exciting thing in his life was the weekly TTRPG campaign he played with some of his online friends. But then one day, he met him; the most Lovely Boy in the whole world. A young man in one of his classes. A young man so sweet, so kind, so loving—that the otherwise impenetrable heart of Archer shuddered with a feeling he’d heard about, but which he’d never experienced himself before.Unsure of what to do next, or how to handle his heart’s longing for his fellow classmate, Archer decides to take a friend’s advice. People say there’s a curious person, as strange as can be, who lives in a pink house and helps people with their problems.Archer wants to know what to do with these feelings inside him, but what he’ll get won’t only change the way he looks at that certain Lovely Boy, but also himself and the world. Everything is about to change, and Archer has no idea.

LOOKS

Archer shorter than average and is a bit on the thin side. Although he is nineteen, he still looks like he should be attending high school. He is patiently waiting for his well-earned glow up. Archer has fair skin, which looks paler than it is thanks to his black-blue hair. A few months back he dyed his hair a deep, electric blue, but his true color—the black that is almost blue he got from his Mexican mom—has slowly pushed the blues to the very tips of his hair. Archer’s hair is a mess. He hasn’t cut it in months and so the tips of his bob curl, giving the impression of even more volume.Archer has brown eyes.Archer wears makeup, mostly foundation and powder. He does this to attempt and make his baby face look a little less like a high school sophomore.Archer is a broke college student living out of his closet-sided dorm room. He is wearing the same things he was wearing in high school, save for a few newer items which stand in stark contrast with all the well-worn skinny jeans, oversized sweaters, and Vans sneakers. Archer does not really care about the way he looks, or at least didn’t until he met a certain Lovely Boy.If he had the money to buy a new wardrobe, he wouldn’t even know where to begin. And, in all honesty, he might decide to spend a portion of that money on video games and TTRPGs instead.

AESTHETIC

Archer’s aesthetic is as simple as the cover of a table-top role-playing game overlaid with a starry pastel Instagram filter. Soft tones. Sweet hues. Heroes wielding magic fighting monsters. Oversized sweaters, long enough that he needs to roll them up in order for his hands to stick out. High fantasy illustrations inspired by acid trips printed across a top matched with a pair of high-waisted, acid-washed jeans. And of course, the kind of cringey corporate-nerdy tees that are piled high on the clearance section of Hot Topic. Who’d ever wear a shirt of that one movie they thought would span an 7-film series? For 90% off? Archer would. Gladly.Archer’s motifs include role-playing dice, X’s, pencil sketches in the margins of school notebooks, old-school monster illustrations, the glow of a laptop screen inside a dark room.Archer’s emoji is multiply: ✖

TRIVIA

Archer was the first character created for the reboot of The Fabulous Gays. Archer was always meant to be one of the driving forces in the main arc of the book series, and because of his importance he went through several changes.

Archer’s name was originally Mateus, as Archer was an avid fan of JRPGs (Mateus being a references to the Final Fantasy summoning of the same name). During the writing process it became clear that Archer was more of a TTRPG kind of nerd. Also, after some research, I found that in the Final Fantasy lore the summoning of Mateus is that of a man who—after doing a bad deed—was punished by being trapped in the body of a woman. Oooooooooof. Thanks but no thanks!!

Archer was originally meant to “change in appearance” during the story. This is written several times in my notes and I have no idea what any of it means. My best guess is that Archer was supposed to change up his hairstyle after, you know, things happen in the story, but this did not manifest in the book.- A trace of this can be found in Volume 1, during Archer’s epilogue.

Archer is mixed race.- His father is white and his mother is Mexican.- Archer’s mother is a first-generation immigrant who moved to the United States when she was a teenager. She didn’t know any English, though she managed to pick up the language after a while. She claims that she learned English as fast as she did thanks to her love for children’s books. Her favorite book is Roald Dahl’s “Matilda.”- Archer’s parents live in Southern California.

Archer is not sure what he wants to do with his life. His decision to attend the college in Socorro was mainly to put some distance between the world he knew and himself. He wanted to have the room to experiment, to try and be someone else, something else.

TRIVIA

PAGES and Archer were created at the same time for the reboot of The Fabulous Gays; though unlike Archer (who is entirely new), PAGES was created using some of the ideas from the original version of the story.- One of the most fun parts of the original version of The Fabulous Gays was the narration. It was personal, snappy, and dripping with character. Of course, this narration in the original was supposed to be—in a way—Hoshi's voice. This didn't work for the reboot, so I thought of cutting it altogether.- It wasn't until I was re-reading the original version of the story, particularly the opening section in the imaginary movie theater, that I felt there was something really good here. It did not feel right to just cut it, so I expanded on it. I fleshed out this voice, and so PAGES was born.- An additional reason why Hoshi was never considered for a role as narrator of the novel is that I wanted to show the reader that Hoshi is a good person who means well, and I didn't feel I could do as good of a job if Hoshi were in the driver's seat. It felt more fitting to see Hoshi be this good person from the perspective of someone—let's say—a little less virtuous.

PAGES is an avid fan of comic books. They have a deep appreciation for the art of Alex Ross.

BIO

Ras (all pronouns) is a character from The Fabulous Gays, first appearing in Volume 1 and joining the main cast in Volume 2.All rise for the King of Queer Disasters! Ras is a flirtatious maelstrom in more ways than one. He’s always dressed to the nines, his wardrobe is perpetually exploding with vibrant colors and stylish patterns. Although fashionable to the core, his choice of color palettes often leaves him looking less like a catwalk model and more like… a clown of sorts. If Ras minds this or not, he’s never made it apparent.According to legend, Hoshi first met Ras when they were in kindergarten—though neither of them remember that far back. What they do remember is all the times they tried to make their relationship work. Hoshi and Ras dated all throughout highschool and for a good chunk of their twenties. Their romance functioned much like a tropical storm; it arrived unannounced, it lay their lives to waste, and it dissipated with little to no fanfare. It’s been years since their last break up, and both of them are still rebuilding. The literal life of the party. The room seems to brighten when Ras walks in and no matter the situation, he can always make even the saddest of people laugh. He’s such a good time, he’s got dates lined up both ways ‘till Sunday. With a calendar so stuffed with cuties wanting to spend time with him, you’d think that he’d never feel lonely…And yet, there’s something missing in his life. He can’t do it by himself, that’s why he’s going to ask Hoshi for help. Will Hoshi be willing to trust Ras one more time?

LOOKS

Ras is tall and slender. He has light skin. Back in highschool—before his gender ascension—Ras had dirty-blond hair, which was specially darker in the roots. Ras has since gone for a platinum look, though he tries his best to take care of his hair. Listen, everybody likes the idea of bleaching their hair but the chemicals in that stuff? They nasty. You’ve never met anyone who takes better care of their hair than Ras. He goes to the salon every other week, keeping it at the perfect length, and styling it to match his mood.Ras has steely blue eyes.Ras is always wearing makeup—always set to eleven. He’s as colorful and obnoxious as a peacock. Bright eyeliner. Vibrant eye-shadow. Glitter all over the place. And never the same colors two days in a row. Variety is the spice of life, after all.Although Ras is often spotted wearing designer items, he’s never paid full price for any of them. After all, he works at a second-hand shop, and he’s keen to pick through the new arrivals before moving them on to the racks. As long as it looks stylish, and it’s colorful, Ras will wear it. He’s never heard of matching. Stripes and argyle? Why not! All life is chaos, and Ras has embraced the unpredictability of living fully.

AESTHETIC

Ras’ aesthetic is a total disaster. It’s almost like some kind of joke. First there’s the setup: stylish and fancy clothes, satin finish, suit jackets over one’s shoulders, undone ties around a person’s neck. Then there’s the twist: neon nail polish, obscenely mismatched makeup, and the most unholy of patterns. Music playing in the background as two people embrace; smooth, tasteful jazz in the same playlist as trashy pop songs. Oil and water shouldn’t mix, and yet Ras makes all of it work.Ras’ motifs include garish balloons, smiley faces, LOL and LMAO in bold lettering, rainbow gradients, peacock feathers, tacky emoji stickers.Ras’ emoji is clown face: 🤡

TRIVIA

Ras is one of the oldest characters in the world of The Fabulous Gays. Back when the original plan was to make a sequel to the interactive fiction game, Ras emerged as one of the new characters. Here are some details about Ras’ character back then.- Ras’ original name was Rasputin, a trait that almost carried into the reboot.- Ras was going to be the ultimate antagonist of the first arc; a powerful Aruma-User who controlled three unique Arumas and who had a tragic backstory. This version of Ras would have him grow up around all of the great disaster of the world, meaning that he would’ve been present for things like the 9-11 attack, the Fukushima nuclear disaster, and others. Being witness to so much suffering transformed this version of Ras into—for all intents and purposes—a supervillain set in ending all suffering.- It was originally planned that Ras would end up taking the life of a member of the main cast. When it came time to reboot the setting, as well as stepping away from the baddie-of-the-week format, it felt like Ras was going to become another forgotten character concept—but then arrived a wonderful thought: what if the Ras who existed in this reboot wasn’t an enemy, but an ally? A devilish idea indeed!

LOOKS

Miel is shorter than average. She has brown skin. Her hair is naturally dark-brown, though a little bit ago she bleached it and dyed it yellow, hence why her natural roots are beginning to show.Miel has brown eyes. Her wardrobe can be aptly described as grandmacore. Miel’s taste for clothing revolves around long cardigans, boxy dresses, knee-high socks; all of them in soft colors and pleasant patterns. Miel didn’t set out to make herself look like the youngest granny in town, it just happened organically. She loves soft, pastel hues, and she loves wearing long cardigans. Miel feels adorable—and incredibly comfy—in her clothes, and that’s all that matters.During her freshmen year of high-school, Miel got in a car accident, which led to her losing her right leg. At first, Miel hated her prosthetic leg—physical therapy was really hard on her—but over time her feelings have changed for the better. She now sees her prosthetic, and her cane, as tools of freedom that allow her to go wherever she wishes.

AESTHETIC

Miel aesthetic is best summarized as the most serene reading nook. Soft-colored walls. A cushioned window seat. Wooden bookshelves that show wear, because the books they contain have been read many times. A little round table, dressed in a patterned cloth, upon which rests a teacup and a plate of cookies. There’s light coming in through the window, but the white curtains diffuse most of it. There’s a subtle, gentle glow around the nook, and no noise of the world beyond can make it within. Inside this peaceful place, there is nothing to worry about, and there is all the time in the world to read and find oneself.Miel’s motifs include: books (brand new and time worn), pastel hues, cute patterns, tarot cards, astronomical symbols, honey pots, adorable cartoon animals (primarily bears).Miel’s emoji is glowing star: 🌟

TRIVIA

Miel is the one character who has gone through the most name changes—some of which stayed right up until the very last moment.- For the first few drafts of the book she was named Aura, but this was changed because it was a little too close to Archer; as they are both short names that start with ‘A’. Names that are close like that tend to cause reader confusion. Seeing as how Miel and Archer are important characters to the world, and their bond guarantees they will be spending scenes together, it was decided to change her name.- Then came Kimberly. For a couple drafts Miel’s name was in fact Kimberly. This actually came from some of my earliest character notes, particularly one note that mentioned how Miel’s mother gave her an American name so that she would feel more at home in the United States. This explanation for her name even made it into one draft, but it was ultimately cut.- There were other temporary names, but some didn’t even make it through one night before they got changed. In the end, we settled with Miel, which means honey in Spanish, as we felt it encapsulated all of Miel’s traits in one simple word: her sweetness, her resilience, and the importance of the color yellow.
